York Vikings Rotary helps youngsters brave storms in the sailing adventure of a lifetime

York Vikings Rotary has teamed up with the Ocean Youth Trust North again this year to provide local youngsters with the adventure of a lifetime on the high seas.

12 pupils from local schools, Sea Scouts, Scout and Girl Guides groups took part in the sailing trip. They reported back to an audience of 50 Rotarians and friends recently on their teambuilding experience as first time mariners guiding the 72 foot James Cook sailing boat down the east coast from North Shields to Whitby and braving storms in the process.  Experienced Thirsk skipper, Ben Frank, led the crew of youngsters, aged between 14 and 17 in a six day trip designed to develop practical skills and build confidence and teamwork skills.

High seas prevented the young crew from reaching their first destination around the Farne Islands, but the team persevered, sharing practical and leadership tasks during the trip before docking in Whitby harbour.

It is the 16th year that York Vikings Rotary has sourced funding and provided practical support to make the trips happen, providing excitement, adventure and invaluable learning for over 100 local young people, which they otherwise would never have experienced.

Says Vikings Rotary President, Mick Fox, “We are always uplifted by the commitment, skill and passion for adventure that those chosen for the mission show.  During the week they build friendships, face challenges and adversity together and demonstrate skills beyond their years.  The time they spend together will stay with them for the rest of their lives.  And to see them display their enthusiasm and confidence in presenting to an audience makes it even more worthwhile for everyone involved.”

It is just one of many charities and good causes that the York Vikings Rotary Club supports.  The club currently has around 45 members who meet weekly on Tuesday at 7.30pm at Pike Hills Golf Club.  New members, or those simply interested in finding out more about the work they do are always welcome.
