Charity, Helping

York Vikings Rotary Kicks Off 2025 with a Generous Gift to The Three Bears Foundation

As we step into 2025 with hope and purpose, the York Vikings Rotary Club has made a heartfelt contribution to a cause that resonates deeply within the community. With a £6,000 donation, the club is helping The Three Bears Foundation in its mission to fight pancreatic cancer, one of the most aggressive and underfunded cancers.

A Cause Close to the Heart

The connection between York Vikings Rotary and The Three Bears Foundation is more than just philanthropy—it’s deeply personal. Raymond Burn, the founding president of the Rotary club, left behind a legacy of service that continues through his son, Mark Burn. In 2017, Mark tragically lost his wife, Jane, to pancreatic cancer. Determined to make a difference, he established The Three Bears Foundation, raising over £140,000 to fund vital medical research, increase awareness, and support families affected by this devastating disease.

Powering Research and Hope

The Rotary’s donation will directly contribute to the groundbreaking work of Professor Thomas A. Hughes at York St John University. Professor Hughes is a leading specialist in pancreatic cancer research, working to better understand and combat the disease. His work is a beacon of hope in the fight against an illness that is often diagnosed too late for effective treatment.

Earlier this month, Mick Fox, President-elect of York Vikings Rotary, presented the donation to Mark Burn and Professor Hughes, reinforcing the club’s commitment to supporting local initiatives that create real impact.

More Than Just Fundraising

York Vikings Rotary is much more than a fundraising group. With over 45 dedicated members, the club is built on the principle of “Service Above Self”—bringing together like-minded individuals who are passionate about giving back. Throughout the year, they raise funds through events like race nights, bric-a-brac sales, and Christmas collections at Tesco, all to support a variety of local causes.

President-elect Mick Fox summed it up perfectly:

“Supporting local charities is at the heart of our mission. We bring together people who share a commitment to helping others—and we have great fun doing it. The Three Bears charity is one of several close to our hearts, and we know the money we give will be wisely spent in building a better understanding of this cruel illness.”
